Federal Releases and Lamar County
The Federal Bureau of Prisons pathway applies only when the person is or was in federal custody. A Lamar County resident may be arrested locally, held temporarily, or appear in a local news or court context, but a federal sentence and federal release are not verified through the Lamar County Jail release process. If a person left the county jail because a federal agency assumed custody, the local record is a transfer or hold disposition. The later release from a federal institution belongs to the federal record trail.
The research points to the U.S. Marshals Service as part of the federal custody sequence. People arrested or detained under federal statutes are brought before a magistrate or judge for an initial hearing, then may be released or remanded to marshal custody to stand trial. If convicted, the responsible agency delivers prisoners to institutions to serve the imposed sentence. Once in BOP custody, the BOP locator becomes the public starting point for federal custody and release-date information.
Confirm a BOP Release
BOP's inmate locator is the official public path for federal inmates from 1982 to the present. Its records guidance gives a useful released-person rule: if the listed release date is in the past and no facility location is indicated, the release occurred on that date and the person is no longer in BOP custody. That does not mean the person has no federal supervised release, detainer, state case, immigration custody, or other legal status. It means the BOP custody event ended.
- Confirm that the case is federal rather than a Lamar County jail, Alabama state-prison, or ABPP supervision matter.
- Search the BOP inmate locator using identifying information available from the federal case or family records.
- If the locator shows a past release date and no facility location, treat that as confirmation that BOP custody ended on that date.
- If the release date is future-facing, remember that BOP says dates may change because sentences are reviewed and recalculated for First Step Act time credits.
- For supervision conditions, use the federal court case, probation office, or other federal source instead of assuming BOP release ends the case.
The Lamar County released inmates page explains the local search path. Use this page only when the person's custody moved into the federal system. A person can have a Lamar County history and a federal BOP record, but those records answer different questions.
BOP Records and Contact Route

Public lookup: BOP Inmate Locator
The Lamar research did not provide a Lamar County BOP office, local federal facility address, or direct local phone number. Do not substitute Lamar County Jail contacts for federal release verification.
For a federal custody record, begin with the locator and the federal court case. If a records copy is needed, use the BOP or Department of Justice records route that matches the document requested. If the person was only temporarily held in Lamar County on a federal hold, the county jail may have a release or transfer record showing that federal custody began, but the county jail will not be the source for the later BOP release date.
About the Federal Custody Path
This page is not a county facility page. It covers a federal custody pathway that may serve Lamar County residents or arrestees when a federal case is involved. The BOP locator searches federal inmates, not state prisoners, county-jail detainees, probationers, or people held by immigration authorities outside BOP custody. That boundary prevents false negatives. A no-result in BOP does not prove that the person was never arrested in Lamar County, never held by ADOC, or never supervised by ABPP.
Likewise, a BOP result does not replace local or state records. If the person was first held in Lamar County Jail, the local booking and transfer record may still be needed to explain when the county custody ended. If the person had an Alabama sentence before or after the federal matter, ADOC or ABPP records may also be needed. If the person was moved after BOP release into immigration custody or another jurisdiction, the BOP record will not be the final status record.
Past Release Date Guidance
The BOP past-release rule is more useful than many local jail searches because it can show a historical federal release date. The research says BOP covers federal inmates from 1982 to the present. When the locator lists a release date in the past and no facility location appears, BOP's own guidance says the release occurred on that date and the inmate is no longer in BOP custody. This is a specific federal rule and should not be copied onto Lamar County Jail or ADOC pages.
Federal release dates can still be complicated. BOP says release dates may change as sentences are reviewed and recalculated for First Step Act time credits. For someone still in custody, a projected or expected federal date is not an actual release. For someone already released, a past date confirms BOP custody ended, but federal supervised release, parole-like supervision for older cases, state prosecution, immigration custody, or another correctional system can still follow. Users should read the court docket before treating the date as the end of all obligations.
When the County Record Says Transfer
A Lamar County Jail release entry can show that a person left the jail without returning to the community. If jail staff say the person was released to a federal agency, that local record is a transfer or detainer event. The next search should be federal, not another county release page. Ask the jail for the public transfer disposition if available, then compare it with the federal court case and BOP locator. If the person was never sentenced federally, BOP may not have a prison record, and the Marshals or federal court record may be more relevant.
Keep ICE separate from BOP. Immigration custody has its own locator and rules. A person can be in federal criminal custody, immigration custody, or both in sequence, but the BOP locator and ICE locator are not interchangeable. Use the BOP page for federal prison custody and past BOP release dates; use the ICE page for current immigration detention or CBP custody over 48 hours.
For a federal path, separate the stages. The county jail may hold a person briefly, the U.S. Marshals Service may handle federal prisoner custody around court proceedings, and BOP may become the long-term sentence custodian after conviction. A release from one stage can be a transfer to the next. That is why a Lamar County Jail record, a federal court record, and a BOP locator result may each answer a different part of the same custody trail.
BOP Release Search Fields
BOP's locator supports searches by name or register number. The research notes that BOP result lists can show age, race, sex, release date, and location. When the release date is in the past and no facility location appears, BOP says the person was released from BOP custody on that date. That does not mean all court or supervision duties have ended. It only answers the BOP custody question.
For Lamar County users, the best identifier may come from a federal court record or marshal-related custody paperwork rather than a county jail page. If the person was moved from Lamar County Jail to federal custody, ask the jail for the transfer notation and receiving agency, then use the federal locator or federal court sources. Do not use BOP for a local bond release unless the facts show a federal custody path.
BOP results are different from ADOC results in one helpful way: the locator can cover federal inmates from 1982 to the present and can show a past federal release date. That still does not make it a county release list. A Lamar County Jail release date and a BOP release date can be months or years apart if the person first moved through federal court and then served a federal sentence.
If the BOP locator shows no current facility and a past release date, treat that as release from BOP custody only. The person may still have federal supervision, state obligations, immigration custody, or another legal status. The source to check next depends on the court record and the release destination.
For Lamar County, BOP is a secondary path used only after the facts point federal.
